The Director of Counseling & Health Services is a new position. This position is the first in phasing-in campus-based counseling services for Capital University students and will combine with an outsourced Health Service provider to make available medical services for students. The Director will provide and coordinate mental health services and lead the efforts of the University Counseling and outsourced Health Services unit for the main campus and the Law School and have a dual reporting line to the Vice-President and Dean of Student Affairs and the Law School Assistant Dean of Student Administration.
The Director will work to ensure the highest level of ethical psychological and medical treatment for students. This includes providing direct service and coordinating prevention outreach, serving as an active Student Affairs and campus colleague in assessing student needs, consulting with faculty, staff, and family members as appropriate to analysis and treatment, shaping policy, leading program development and/or expansion, and assisting with crisis and emergency response.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision & Planning
•
Provide supervision for counseling and student health services.
Counseling Services
•
Provide short-term individual, group, and crisis counseling services that assists undergraduate, graduate and law students with acquiring and using lifelong skills through the development of self-awareness, academic, career, and interpersonal communication skills.
Outreach & Engagement
•
Participate in New Student Orientation programs and activities on both campuses.
Critical Incident Management
•
Serve as a member of the Critical Incident Planning Committee and the Critical Incident Response Teams on both campuses.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires higher education experience, with a required Doctorate (PhD, EdD, PsyD) in counseling or clinical psychology or a closely related field. The candidate must have the capacity to function as a lead psychologist/counselor in a university setting, demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills, knowledge and experience with clinical supervision, and experience providing effective outreach programming and outcomes assessment. The ideal candidate will have a collaborative spirit, a commitment to high professional ideals, and to a liberal education environment with a spirit of inclusion and diversity. The candidate will be able to manage the demands of a challenging student caseload while also maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships with faculty, and staff. The candidate is also expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The Counselor and Disability Services Coordinator is a new position that will be responsible for providing counseling and disability services for the university. Responsibilities include providing direct therapeutic and diagnostic counseling and/or education to students with social, emotional, academic, and/or mental health concerns; outreach services to the University Community; and on-going training and/or staff development for paraprofessional student staff, faculty, and professional staff. The Counselor and Disability Services Coordinator is a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team on both campuses reporting to the Director of University Counseling & Health Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Counseling Services
•
Provide short-term individual, group, and crisis counseling services that assists undergraduate graduate and law students with acquiring and using lifelong skills through the development of self-awareness, academic, career, and interpersonal communication skills at the main campus and the law school.• Assess student problems and concerns, and assist student with formulating treatment, action plans, and/or referral to external resources.
• Provide consultation services to faculty and staff in the management of student behavioral concerns.
• Provide short-term alcohol and other drug counseling to help increase the awareness of risk factors and lifestyle decisions related to the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs and to foster the development of healthy coping skills.
• Refer students with serious psychological/mental health or chronic problems with alcohol and other drug usage to appropriate in-patient or out-patient treatment programs for intensive care.
Disability Services
•
Provide personal counseling and support to students with disabilities.• Review disability documentation and provide short-term confidential counseling.
• Coordinate academic and other accommodations with appropriate campus departments. Meets with the Associate Dean of the Law School to define the specific accommodations for each individual student.
• Prepares documentation for students taking bar examinations.
• Work with faculty and staff to develop strategies to support student success
. •
Provide faculty with appropriate auxiliary aids and accommodations to assist students.• Assist students with the development of problem-solving skills.
• Create and facilitate support groups for students on the autism spectrum.
• Work with Information Technology and other internal/external agents to secure appropriate alternative print and assistive technology resources.
Outreach & Engagement
•
Participate in New Student Orientation programs and activities on both campuses.• Assist with training and professional development programs and activities.
• Provide topic-specific presentations for student-related functions and help coordinate health and wellness programs for the university community.
Critical Incident Management
•
Assist with the management of critical incidents, including management of students, faculty, and staff debriefings.• Maintain on-call availability to consult with staff regarding emergencies on both campuses.
Personnel
•
This position may become responsible for supervision/management of masters or doctoral student(s).
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology, or related field and 2-3 years experience working with individuals with disabilities and the ability to interact with a diverse student population. Demonstrated experience working with young adults on the autism spectrum required. Knowledge of federal law relating to rights of individuals with disabilities, specifically Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ADA Act is preferred.
