Hi Ellen, I work with Dr. Emily Decker who recommended that I send this info to you for possible distribution. I was able to, briefly, stop in at the Creating Healthy Communities Network meeting yesterday to get the Franklin County Activity Plan and sign up for your mailing list. I saw many familiar faces at the meeting and I hope to get the opportunity to attend the next one to connect with so many who are getting the work done to get Franklin County healthy and fit.
Thanks for all that you do for our community!
Wendy Anderson-Willis, MD

H1N1 FLU UPDATE 10.16.09 |
|
H1N1 Vaccine Update
· The first shipments of H1N1 vaccine received by public health included over 14,000 injectable doses and 12,000 nasal spray (flu mist, used only for healthy people ages 2-49) – most of which was quickly distributed to hospitals for healthcare workers. Both health departments are working closely together to coordinate distribution. More about H1N1 vaccine.
· The first round of vaccinations for EMS and healthcare workers with direct patient contact is underway. A vaccination clinic for healthcare workers not affiliated with hospitals took place Thursday, Oct. 15, vaccinating over 1,000 people.
· The next round of vaccination will be for the subset of target groups defined by CDC for limited vaccine availability. These include: · Pregnant women · Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age · Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel, who have direct contact with patients or infectious material (continued) · Children from 6 months through 4 years of age · Children and adolescents from 5 through 18 years of age, who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza
· Because clinics depend on the type and amount of vaccine received, they will most likely be on short notice, especially early on. To stay tuned for upcoming clinic information at: · http://www.ColumbusPandemicFlu.org or by calling 211 · Facebook – www.facebook.com and search Columbus Flu Info · Twitter – www.twitter.com/ColumbusFluInfo · Subscribe to e-health alerts
Current Flu Season Overview
· H1N1 is still mild in severity, however even in a mild form, there will continue to be cases, hospitalizations, and sadly, even deaths. Up to 50% of Franklin County residents may experience the H1N1 flu. Currently, H1N1 is widespread in our community –see weekly flu activity reports for Columbus/Franklin County.
§ We are no longer counting individual confirmed H1N1 cases, according to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We are counting clusters, hospitalizations and pediatric deaths.
§ We are tracking the disease in our community by looking at emergency room visits for influenza like illness (ILI); school absenteeism; prescription medications for ILI treatment, and over the counter medication sales to treat ILI.
§ Weekly updates such as this one are planned to follow (unless more is needed), as well as more information about our vaccine distribution plan.
