Subject: Financial Literacy Competition & Event
Community Partners,
As you know financial education is central to the stability of our workforce, communities and to the lives of families across Ohio. In celebration of National Financial Literacy Month the Ohio Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the Ohio Literacy Network and many government and social service agencies, financial institutions and professional education organizations have joined forces to create a case study competition and a family financial fair. The statewide case study competition gives families, groups and individuals the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and knowledge of money management and the possibility of winning a $500 savings bond. The deadline for Case Study submissions is March 7th.
This competition is a great “teaching moment” for adults, families and students of all ages, as it incorporates math, number sense, daily life situations and financial choices in a fun, creative activity which encourages self-expression and collaboration. The families who participated in this competition last year shared that it was the first time they had sat together and discussed finances, spending habits and generated a solution that included every one’s ideas.
We would appreciate your assistance in promoting this opportunity for Central Ohioans to increase their financial knowledge and express their creativity.
Winners of the case study competition will be awarded prizes and will be recognized on stage at the Ohio Family Financial Fair being held at the Columbus Downtown High School on March 27th from 10:00-1:00.
Full details on the Case Study Competition and Financial Fair are available at: www.ohioliteracynetwork.org.
Please share, circulate, and participate in the case study competition. Thanks in advance for joining us in this creative, education activity and supporting our celebration of National Financial Literacy Month. We appreciate your participation and support.
Sincerely,
Lisa Larson

Subject: Black History Month Documentary Series, February 25
February 25
Beginning Thursday, February 4 and continuing every Thursday during the month of February, The Ohio State University Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will present a documentary designed to examine African American history and engage the community in dialogue about an issue that impacts past, present and future generations. Documentaries will be shown on Thursdays at 6:30 pm at the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center located at 905 Mt. Vernon Ave.
“Each documentary will bring to life four of the most important African American Figures of the 20th century.” says Dr. Judson L. Jeffries, Professor of African American and African Studies and Director of the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center. At the conclusion of the documentary, a discussion will be led by an expert on the subject under examination. “These documentaries are not only enlightening, but thought provoking Please join us in this wonderful opportunity to examine the life and work of four of the most important Black figures in the struggle for racial equality and self-determination.”
The documentary presentation will include:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam
February 25, 2010, 6:30 pm
Discussion Leader:
Shabaka Ture,
Younger generations know Dr. Martin Luther King as the country’s most prominent civil rights leader, but King’s opposition to the Vietnam War, and to U.S. foreign policy in general, has been largely ignored.
On April 4, 1967, exactly one year before Dr. King was assassinated, he gave a speech at Riverside church in New York City called “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.” Time magazine called the speech” demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi,” and the Washington Post declared that King had” diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people.”
The film showings are free and open to the public. For more information visit http://aaas.osu.edu or contact the Community Extension Center at 614-292-3922.
Hi Ellen,
Godman Guild is offering some new and exciting adult education and employment programs in March. The attached flyer outlines these offerings.
One program in particular I would like to highlight is our new Transitions Program which is designed to help persons with a high school diploma or GED (or close to obtaining one) prepare (academically, financially, mentally) for college, vocational certification program or apprenticeship program, make the transition to higher education, complete their training program and obtain living wage employment 18-30 months later. The first component is a 12 week course to increase math, reading, and language skills in preparation for college placement tests and/or employer tests. Class includes career exploration and lessons to increase computer, personal wellness and financial literacy skills. Staff will (1) assist with application processes, (2) provide support as participants transition to college/vocational school or apprenticeship program, (3) remain supportive throughout the participants degree/certification program, and (4) assist the participants in securing employment placement in their field of study. This program includes $550-$950 in financial incentives (for books and for securing living wage employment).
Please pass this on to your list serve. Thanks!
Wendy
