Home Depot: Christmas Lights & Power Drills

News Release

<< Back
The Home Depot to Expand Its Recycling Efforts With Christmas Light and Power Drill Exchange

ATLANTA, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — As a part of its long-term commitment to the environment and sustainability, The Home Depot® will kick-off this holiday season with its second annual Eco Options Christmas Light Trade In event and the first ever Power Drill Trade In, Trade Up event.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030502/HOMEDEPOTLOGO)

The Home Depot Power Drill Trade In, Trade Up event begins Sunday, October 25 and runs through Sunday, November 8 and offers customers the chance to bring in their used or broken power drills and get 15 percent off a new lithium-ion drill. Lithium-ion is a revolutionary technology in cordless tools offering more power and less weight. Lithium-ion chemistry is not harmful to the environment and it outperforms NiCad by as much as 50 percent, requiring less charging time and saving energy. Consumers can bring in their old power drill to any The Home Depot U.S. store and trade up to a lithium-ion drill and The Home Depot will recycle your old drill.

In addition, on November 5, The Home Depot begins its second annual Eco Options Christmas Light Trade In event. Customers can bring in their old working or non-working holiday light strings to be recycled and receive a $3 off coupon towards the purchase of energy efficient seasonal light-emitting diodes (LED) string lights. Customers must purchase their new LED lights between November 5 and November 15 and are limited to five redemptions. This event will also be valid at all The Home Depot U.S. stores.

LED lights are shown to use 80 percent less electricity than standard mini lights and last up to 10 times longer. This holiday season, The Home Depot will carry traditional white and multicolored ENERGY STAR qualified LED lights that offer superior connectivity – allowing consumers to link up to 87 strands (or one-quarter mile) of lights off of one outlet without the scare of overloading the circuit.

The Power Tool Trade In, Trade Up event and the Eco Options Christmas Light Trade In event is another way The Home Depot is expanding its long-term commitment to the environment and sustainability through the Eco Options program. Eco Options is a classification that allows customers to easily identify products that have less of an impact on the environment. In June 2008, Eco Options introduced a free CFL recycling service for customers to safely dispose of expired, unbroken CFL bulbs.

Kilroy: Special Payments on Their Way for Service Members
Who Served Under Stop Loss Orders

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Mary Jo Kilroy announced that over 185,000 service members who have had their enlistments involuntarily extended since September 11, 2001 will be eligible for special payments for each month they were held under stop-loss orders.  The $500 monthly payments are made available through the 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act which was enacted this summer.

“The Stop Loss Policy places an additional burden on military families who spend a significant time apart already.  While servicemen and women know that they must answer to the call of duty, the additional time these veterans have spent serving our country should be recognized and compensated for. These payments show our gratitude for our troops’ prolonged service so that our nation can remain safe and secure,” said Kilroy.

The Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay is available to service members who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009.  Service members from every branch of the military will receive compensation. The Army had the largest number of personnel affected by stop-loss orders. Over 131,000 soldiers, including Guardsmen and Reservists, have been stop-lossed since 2001 for an average duration of 8 months each. Under the new policy, they will now be compensated an average of $4,000.

Service members were eligible to submit their claim for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay beginning on October 21, 2009.  All applications must be submitted to the respective services no later than Oct. 21, 2010.  Service members must provide documented proof they were Stop Lossed with their claim.  Family members of deceased service members should contact the appropriate military service for assistance in filing their claim.
