Please see the attached 2009 Veterans Day Parade Application and Waiver. Let’s get them in soon, before you know it we’ll be rolling down High & Broad! Thanks and I hope you all have a great weekend.

The parade will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009.  Formation of the parade starts at 10:00 A.M.  Step off for the celebration will be at 12:00 noon at Nationwide Boulevard and High Street.

For those who get angry at the City celebrating on any other day than the 11th, we do this because on the actual day-NO ONE is downtown. State Fed and County? All off on that day. We want to capture the most people to celebrate our Veteran Heritage with. This also allows all the surrounding areas to hold their celebration without competition from our great parade.

Hi Ellen,

Could you share this information with your distribution list?  Thanks!

Teen driver safety is becoming one of the most talked about safety topics. 16-year-olds have the highest crash rate per mile driven of any age group. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens aged 16 to 18.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is taking a new approach to address teen driver safety issues.  In October, they are launching a “Parents are the Key” public awareness and education campaign.  The camping focuses on informing and empowering parents to know and enforce teen driving laws.  Radio, print media, the internet and print materials will be used to reach parents of teen drivers with 4 key messages:

  • crashes are the #1 killer of teens
  • Ohio graduated driver licensing laws
  • enforcing teen driving laws
  • Parents make a difference – two-way dialogue with teens about safe driving

In partnership with CDC and the “Parents Are the Key” campaign, Safe Communities is distributing thousands of copies of FREE posters and fact sheets with the campaign information that can be handed out to parents of teen drivers.  Materials can be distributed at high school football games, posted in workplaces, coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores or churches, included in company mailings and distributed in any other way that may reach parents.
JOIN the CAMPAIGN – DISTRIBUTE FREE CAMPAIGN MATERIALS.
If your organization would like to receive free campaign materials to help educate parents of teen drivers, please complete the attached form and e-mail or fax it back to Franklin County Safe Communities at vrgavin@columbus.gov or (614)645-5888.  Orders for materials can be placed through November 30, 2009. materials will be received shortly after orders are placed.
(Electronic versions of campaign materials are also available.  Contact Vedette Gavin for more information. vrgavin@columbus.gov)

Life Insurance Awareness Month
Are you sure you are protected?

Life insurance is an important way to protect your family lifestyle.  It provides for final expenses as well as a replacement for family income in the event of an untimely death.

We often purchase life insurance and don’t review it to make sure it is performing the way we expected. Since life insurance buyers typically hold policies for a long time, they may not consider the impact that market fluctuations have on the cash values. In addition, the potential for life insurance to create retirement income is often overlooked.

Chances are, your life has changed since you made your last life insurance purchase. The insurance industry has also changed significantly in the last ten years and interest rates have declined. Some policies may actually be losing value because the current interest rates no longer fund the policy appropriately. Do you know if you still have the right coverage?

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, which is the perfect time to review your current life insurance needs. You can get started by visiting the free on-line Needs Calculator. This calculator will help you make sure you have the proper coverage. Once you have done that, contact us to do a free review of all your life insurance coverage. We will help you determine if new products and features are worth considering for your current life stage.

You can’t control the future, but you can take steps now to safeguard your family.  Contact us today to help you.

Did You Know?

Long Term Care — Carriers continue to refine Long Term Care policies and many carriers now offer a Return of Premium (ROP) option. This means that if you purchase a policy and never use the benefits, you can get back all of the premium you paid, less any benefits you have used.  For more information, please contact us.

Dear Veteran/Family Member,

The Ohio Department of Mental Health along with the Multiethnic Advocates for Cultural Competence (MACC) is asking for your input on how the State of Ohio can better provide mental health services to active and retired members of the military and their families. This information, along with a series of regional focus groups, will be used to compile a statewide needs assessment report to assist the mental health service providers in our state to better meet the needs of veterans and the families.

Many of you have personally witnessed or experienced issues such as depression, post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), sleep disorder and other challenges after your or a loved one’s military service We are interested in how the mental health providers in Ohio have responded to your unique needs and perspectives as a veteran.

The survey is anonymous. If you are interested in receiving hard copies to take to your meetings or to have completed by veterans or family members at your organization, please contact our consultants at the information below.

Dear Veteran and Military Leader,
There were some great questions brought up at the Veterans Summit on Monday, including this raised from Darke County: What is the best way to find out when Ohio National Guard troops are being deployed so the county Veteran Service Commissions can reach out to them and their families about local services?
Here’s the answer: You can find this information by visiting the Guard’s Family Assistance Centers.
A map of all the centers is located here: http://ong.ohio.gov/family/About%20Us_files/2009.2.25_FAC%20Map.pdf
By building a local relationship with the Family Assistance Centers, you should be able to get unit deployment, return dates, times and locations for the Ohio National Guard.

I also wanted to make sure you know about an opportunity for veterans across the state to receive pro bono legal services at the Veterans’ Stand Down 2009 event coordinated by Columbus Legal Aid. On Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. veterans will be able to receive free legal services at the Veterans Memorial in Columbus. For more information, please contact JoAnne Roots from the Legal Aid Society of Columbus at (614) 737-0161 or jroots@columbuslegalaid.org.
Thank you,
