Hispanic Student College Access and Success Dialogue
Invitation to a dialogue on Hispanic/Latino college access and success issues and concerns in the state of Ohio. The Hispanic population in Ohio has grown by over 22% since 2000. While this growth is exciting, it is overshadowed by the fact that only 22% of Ohio’s Hispanics have achieved some sort of post-secondary educational degree.

The purpose of the dialogue is to bring leaders from throughout the state, who have a vested interest in the education of Ohio’s Hispanic population, to not only share their concerns, but also to discuss solutions, best practices, and next steps. This dialogue is being co-hosted by the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR), The Ohio Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs (OCHLA), The Ohio College Access Network (OCAN), Educators & Community Helping Hispanics Onward (ECHHO), the Hispanic Roundtable Community Programs and the State of Ohio GEAR UP Program.

The Hispanic Student College Access and Success Dialogue will take place on Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 at the Double Tree Columbus-Worthington Hotel (175 Hutchinson Avenue, Columbus, OH 43235) between 11 AM and 1 PM (lunch will be provided). Test 1 Million Ohio Press Conference

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nearly half of the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with HIV/AIDS are Black.  54% of all new HIV infections are among Black Americans.  43% of the new cases among men, 65% of the new cases among infants, 67% of the new cases among women, and 70% of the new cases among teens in the U.S. are Black.  It is because of these alarming statistics, we will be hosting the Test 1 Million Ohio Press Conference in Columbus, Ohio.  The Test 1 Million Ohio Press Conference is apart of the Black AIDS Institute’s mobilization effort.   The Black AIDS Institute’s “Test 1 Million” Campaign is a call-to-action for 1 million Black Americans to get screened for HIV by June 27, 2010.  The goals of the Campaign are:

  • Cut HIV rates in Black America by 50%
  • Increase the number of Black Americans who know their status by 50%
  • Increase the number of Black Americans in appropriate early care/treatment by 50%
  • Reduce HIV/AIDS stigma in Black America by 50%

Phill Wilson, Founder and Executive Director of the Black AIDS Institute, will be coming to the state capitol to participate in the Test 1 Million Ohio Press Conference!  Along with Mr. Wilson, Senator Eric H. Kearney, Representative Sandra Williams, Marco S. Sommerville (Akron City Council President), and members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus will be present at the Press Conference.

At the Press Conference, each representative will take 2-3 minutes talking about the importance to re-awaken the concern for HIV and the fight against lethargy in the African American community.  After each statement, the respective participant will sign the call to action in front of the press.  This Press Conference will clearly disclose Ohio’s approach to end the AIDS epidemic to a variety of media outlets.  Immediately following the Press Conference, brief meetings will be held to establish a Statewide Strategy to ending the AIDS Epidemic.

Time: 12:00p – 1:00p; 1:00p-2:30p strategy meetings

A Message from Columbus Public Health

Dear Friend,

We are pleased to share with you our 2008 Annual Report. Please take a few moments to look through these featured articles below or link to the full report.  Join us as we look back at the year’s accomplishments and introduce a few of our biggest initiatives for this year.  In particular, we marked 175 years of public health in Columbus with some of our community partners — helping our residents and visitors live healthier and safer lives since 1833.

In an effort to conserve resources, a minimal quantity of hard-copy annual reports was printed.  Instead, we are making the report primarily available online.

We look forward to working with you in 2009 and beyond, protecting Columbus and Worthington residents and visitors.

Yours in good health,

Teresa C. Long, MD, MPH
