Welcome

Welcome to our first Central Ohio Men Against Prostate Cancer (COMAPC) e-newsletter, which focuses on current prostate cancer information and treatments; not just through our articles, but through links to other pertinent organizations and web sites.

Our newsletter compliments our COMAPC.org web site, which rotates the stories of prostate cancer survivors and contains prostate cancer facts, news and events. The site also relates the story of COMAPC, our all volunteer, grass-roots organization established by a group of men with a passion for golf. They used that passion to establish an annual golf tournament from which the proceeds are used to further prostate cancer awareness and yearly screenings.

Since 2006, our annual “Par for Life” Golf Tournament has raised $32,000. Tournament proceeds are used to promote our mission through education, support and advocacy across cultural and economic barriers, particularly for those men who are medically underserved. Today our membership includes not only prostate cancer survivors, but family members and friends of survivors, as well as many others who are interested in our mission.

Please note that our 4th Annual “Par for Life” Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 22nd and we are pleased to announce our first prostate cancer conference, set for Friday, September 18th.

One of COMAPC’s most important goals is to promote discussion and action. With their permission, please forward our newsletter to your friends, family and coworkers, so that we can connect with others who can benefit from our message of early screening.

Contact us at www.comapc.org to contribute financially or to join our volunteer ranks, or both!

Thank you,
Michael Hughes
COMAPC President

In the News…

Recently two new prostate cancer studies conducted in the U.S. and Europe and reported in the “New England Journal of Medicine” received a great deal of publicity in the national and local news media. We have included links to “The New York Times” article “Prostate Test Found to Save Few Lives”, online March 13, 2009, about the study, and the response to the report by the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

COMAPC continues to advise the public to discuss prostate screening, examination options and all research with their own physicians. Medical options should be individually based. Deciding your medical care without professional consultation could result in poor choices and ultimately delayed care and loss of life.

Researchers and clinicians are trying their best to guide us as we strive to achieve and maintain good health. However, it is always best to leave testing choices up to the individual and their physician! As the research continues, COMAPC, as well as the general public, must closely examine this research process, particularly in regards to which segment of the population was targeted and the conclusions based on the research results.

COMAPC speakers are available to explain the research process. Please contact us at www.comapc.org if you or your group would be interested in a presentation.

To Your Health

As we strive to obtain good health and practice prevention, the question of diet is frequently raised. Experts from around the world are studying the relationship between prostate cancer and diet. The website WebMD posted an excerpt from a book written by urologist Sheldon Marks, MD. Dr. Marks shares his thoughts on how men can help PREVENT prostate cancer through nutrition. COMAPC’s medical professionals review articles and findings before sharing them with our audience. Read an excerpt from that article here.

ROOM TO BREATHE
The YWCA Family Center received a much needed renovation thanks to the generous support of the Nationwide Foundation. The facility now has a sheltered recreation area, updated kitchen, residential improvements, and an expanded Nationwide library and community room. The generous gift from Nationwide was supported by the Miles McClellan Construction Company who completed all of the work without closing the facility. HELPING WOMEN MOVE UP
M/I Homes was the lead donor in the 2004 Family Center capital campaign, and now, with the introduction of their new Easton Home store, M/I Homes is partnering again with the YWCA. Both organizations share a common interest in helping our community move up. In the upcoming months, the YWCA will present programs at the new Easton location. On April 23rd, we celebrated ideas and inspiration with a reception, Making Dreams Real. Click here to view a video from this event.

SISTERLY SUPPORT
When YWCA board member Alison Barret was growing up, her sister would lend her money only if Alison would submit a plan for paying back the loan. Since then, Alison has applied this model to My Sister’s Fund, an emergency fund she created for the Griswold women residents that offers short-term loans and teaches them how to repay the loan. Money for this fund is raised through the New to You Accessory Party, held April 30th in the YWCA Ballroom. For event tickets and more information please click here.

GO GREEN
To celebrate Earth Day, Macy’s associates Noreen Hartman and Wendy Spencer invited the YWCA to sell $5.00 off coupons with all proceeds going to the Family Center. Macy’s was excited to partner with the YWCA because of the Family Center’s focus on community gardens.
